Everything you need to block your colourwork knitting
Blocking your knitting: don't see what all of the fuss is about? Well, let me tell you, it is an absolutely transformative process for your knitting. Whether you're knitting colourwork squares, like my patterns, a lace shawl or a cabled jumper, blocking is the final finishing process that will let your knitting really shine.
I've put together a video as part of my Jump Into Colourwork series, which you can see below, or keep scrolling for links to my favourite kit!

Why block your knitting?
As explained in the video, blocking your knitting allows the fibres to settle, helps ease any tension issues, and gives you an opportunity to persuade your fibres to sit a certain way. My patterns are often square pieces that are joined together, so blocking is a really important step to make sure they call fit together!
Things you'll need for blocking your work
Below is a list of the equipment you'll need for blocking. I can almost guarantee that you have what you need without having to go out to buy something specific, however if you do want to up your blocking game, I've included my top picks!
- Somewhere to fully submerge your knitting. A sink, a bucket or a bath (blanket knitters know....)
- Something to drain your knitting. A colander, or a free-draining container
- A gentle detergent. This is optional.
- Something to remove excess water. A towel works best!
- Something to pin your work out onto. Several towels, or blocking mats.
- Something to pin your work with. Dressmaking pins will suffice, blocking pins are great and blocking combs are ideal.
